On July 7, 2008 ForensicSoft Inc released Version 1.1 of SAFE Block XP. The new release added
features to SAFE Block XP Version 1.0. There were no known problems in Version 1.0, the new
release added the following features:
EnCase Support. Due to
the way Encase queries physical disks, SAFE Block 1.0 would only see blocked
logical disks and not blocked physical disks. This behavior only occurred
with EnCase and did not affect all other major forensic tools. SAFE Block
version 1.1 now provides full compatibility with Encase.
Additional Blocking. We added additional blocking of esoteric commands. SAFE Block XP Version 1.1 now passes
all of the U.S. National Institute of Standards (NIST) correctness assertions for Windows software
write blockers, as described here.
SCSI Compatibility Option. We added an entry in the SAFE Block XP Setting screen to allow the user to
have complete (conservative) blocking, which is the default, or to put SAFE Block XP into
SCSI Compatibility mode where it allows some esoteric commands that will likely not
write to the disk, but may allow some applications to run that would otherwise fail with
the default conservative blocking. We recommend using the default
conservative blocking setting for forensic purposes.
Upgrading to Version 1.1 is free to Version 1.0 users. Simply install Version 1.1 over Version 1.0; your
existing Version 1.0 license will still be valid.
